On Wednesday, March 4, 2009 First Daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, came home from school to a surprise in their yard at the White House; A brand new Rainbow Swing Set! The two girl’s squealed with delight! It was a big hit! The girls were so excited that they played on the swing set for nearly an hour in the chilly weather.

Serving many purposes over the last 8 years, the Obama family’s Rainbow swing set and picnic table have both been donated to Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter where they will serve children in need. Play N’ Learn, Inc., our DC, MD & VA area distributor, helped the Obama family with donating Malia & Sasha’s Castle.  It was reported by CNN that the Obama family offered the swing set to the Trump family, but they declined.

The new play equipment marked one of the Obama family’s first personal stamps on the White House grounds. The swing set is a Supersized Rainbow Castle Package IV and includes 3 swings, a buoy ball, tire swing, a fort, monkey bars, a penthouse, slide, rock wall, chain ladder, and rope ladder. The swing set was installed at the executive mansion just outside the Oval office, near the White House pool and the horseshoe pit. It was emblazoned with a plaque proclaiming it is “Malia and Sasha’s Castle.” The Obama family had a picnic table installed on the side of the swing set, with small plates engraved with the names of all 44 presidents.

The Associated Press reported that President Barack Obama had resisted the urge to test out the swing set himself, which was visible from the Oval office, but had pushed his daughters on the swings. The President invited the children of White House staff and the White House press corps to play on the swing set.

President Barack Obama hosted the Children’s Miracle Network Champions in March of 2009. Young children who have fought against serious illness or health problems from all 50 states were in attendance. President Barack Obama invited the children to try out his daughter’s new swing set.

The picnic table became a news item on April 10, 2009, the month after it was installed, when President Barack Obama was spotted sitting deep in conversation at the table with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton while having their meeting on the White House grounds.

We hope that Malia and Sasha’s Castle will bring this much joy and happiness to the children and families it will serve for many more years!
